Do Jiffy Lube, Valvoline, Costco or Walmart do smog checks?

It depends on the individual location. Only a shop with a BAR Smog Check station license can inspect your car, and many stores and chains do not have one. Search the station finder or call the location and ask if it is licensed for Smog Check.

Do AAA, Firestone, Midas or Les Schwab do smog checks?

Some locations might, but a brand name does not tell you. Each station needs its own BAR license to do a Smog Check. Call first and ask if they are licensed and if they can test your car.

How can I tell if a smog station is legit?

Check that the station holds a current BAR license on BAR's license lookup. Make sure it gives you a written estimate before it starts. If anything feels wrong, read our page on illegal smog check stations.

Should I pick a test only or a test and repair station?

Either one can give you a certificate if your car passes. A test only station cannot do emissions repairs, so you would go elsewhere if you fail. A test and repair station can test and fix, which saves a trip.

Do I need an appointment for a smog check?

Each station sets its own policy, so call ahead. Some take walk ins and some book by appointment. Ask about the price and the wait at the same time.

Are smog places open on Sundays?

Hours are set by each station, so some are and many are not. Check the hours with the station before you go. Our finder is a good place to start.

What if a smog station says it cannot test my car?

A station may not have the equipment for your car, or it may decide the car is unsafe. Call another station first and ask if it can inspect your type of vehicle. If the station says the car is unsafe, the Smog Check Referee can help.

What if the station cannot test my car because of an address change?

DMV may not have updated your address or program area yet. Call the DCA Consumer Information Center at (800) 952-5210 for help.

Where can I get a smog certification?

You get a smog certificate at a licensed Smog Check station after your car passes. The station sends it to DMV electronically. It is good for 90 days.

How much is a smog check in Los Angeles or San Diego?

BAR publishes a statewide average, not a price for each city, and stations set their own prices. The average was $67.20 in 2025. Call a few stations near you to compare.

What is the $8.25 smog certificate fee?

It is the state fee for the smog certificate. You pay it at the station only when your car passes. The station charges the same amount it pays the state, and it is posted separately from the inspection price.

Do I have to pay the certificate fee if my car fails?

No. The $8.25 fee is charged only on a passing certificate. You still owe the station for the inspection itself.

Does the station have to give me an estimate?

Yes. The station must give you an estimate, and you must authorize it before the inspection starts. This also applies to a pretest.

Does a smog check cost more for an older car?

On average, yes. In 2025 the average was $64.40 on newer cars tested with the on board diagnostic system and $70.00 on cars tested with the older tailpipe system. Individual stations vary.

Are smog checks free in California?

No. Stations charge for the inspection, and you pay a $8.25 certificate fee if you pass. Help exists for repairs through the Consumer Assistance Program, but not for the inspection itself.

STAR and Test Only Stations

What is a STAR smog check station?

A STAR station meets higher BAR performance standards. It can test all vehicles, including high polluters and directed vehicles. Your DMV renewal notice says if you must use one.

Why do I need a STAR smog check?

Your car was sent to STAR either because it fits a profile of cars more likely to fail or because it was picked at random. BAR randomly directs 2 percent of enhanced area cars each year. Only a STAR station or a Referee can certify directed vehicles.

How do I know if I need a STAR station?

Read your DMV registration renewal notice. If it says Smog Certification Required at a STAR station, you must use one. If it says only Smog Certification Required, any licensed smog station works.

What does test only mean at a smog station?

A test only station does Smog Check inspections but no emissions repairs. It may only do free minor fixes such as a hose it disconnected or a safety issue. It cannot send you to a repair shop it has a financial stake in.

What is the difference between STAR and a regular smog station?

STAR stations must meet higher performance standards and can test every vehicle. Regular stations cannot certify directed vehicles or gross polluters. STAR can be test only or test and repair.

Are all smog stations STAR certified?

No. In 2025 BAR counted 3,597 STAR stations out of 7,329 licensed stations. The rest are non STAR test only, test and repair, dealer, fleet, Referee and repair only stations.

What cars get sent to a STAR station?

BAR directs most 1999 and older cars, plus newer cars the model says are more likely to fail next time. It also sends a random 2 percent sample. The message shows on your DMV renewal notice.

What is a gross polluter?

A gross polluter is a car whose exhaust is far above the normal fail limit. Once repaired, it must be tested at a STAR station or by a Referee. A gross polluter that is not a fleet car may still qualify for CAP or a waiver.

Can I look up a station's STAR score?

Yes. BAR posts a public STAR Report Card at bar.ca.gov/star/report. You can search by station or by inspector license number.

What replaced the Gold Shield program?

STAR replaced Gold Shield. Gold Shield ended on December 31, 2012, and STAR began on January 1, 2013.

Can an inspector be STAR certified?

No. STAR certification is for stations, not for individual inspectors. A station's score depends on how its inspections hold up in follow up results.

Passing, Failing and Repairs

How do I pass a California smog check?

Fix a lit check engine light before you go. If you recently disconnected or replaced the battery, drive a week or two so the readiness monitors reset. Restore any modified engine software to factory settings or a CARB approved version.

Will my car pass smog with the check engine light on?

No. BAR says a vehicle will not pass a Smog Check with the check engine light on. Repair the cause first, then test again.

Can I clear the code right before the test to pass?

Clearing codes does not help. It resets the readiness monitors, so the car will likely show as not ready. On 2010 and newer cars, a stored permanent code can still fail you until the car completes 15 warm up cycles and 200 miles.

How long do I drive after a battery change or code reset?

BAR says to drive a week or two. Two weeks is the time in which most properly working vehicles set the monitors they need. Normal mixed driving works best.

What happens if my car fails the Smog Check?

You get a vehicle inspection report listing the reasons. Fix the problem, then retest. If your renewal notice names STAR, the retest must be at a STAR station. Help is available through CAP, retirement, a waiver or the Referee.

What makes a car fail smog in California?

The most common causes are a lit check engine light, readiness monitors that are not set, and modified engine software. Parts that are missing, damaged or not California legal can fail too. Older cars with worn parts fail more often.

What percent of cars fail smog in California?

BAR data shows 8.51 percent of initial tests failed in 2025. The rate was 7.78 percent for 2000 and newer cars and 17.88 percent for 1999 and older cars. The older the car, the higher the failure rate.

Can I pass emissions with the evap monitor not ready?

Right now, yes on 2000 and newer gasoline cars, because the evaporative monitor is the one monitor that may be incomplete. BAR adopted a rule effective October 1, 2025 that requires all monitors to be complete. BAR says the current pass rules stay in place and changes will be phased in with notice.

How many readiness monitors can be incomplete?

For gasoline cars, 1996 to 1999 models may have any one incomplete, and 2000 and newer may have only the evaporative monitor incomplete. Diesels from 1998 to 2006 may have none. Newer diesels may miss the particulate filter and NMHC catalyst monitors.

Can my car fail smog with no check engine light?

Yes. Not ready monitors, a stored permanent code, modified software, or failed visual and functional checks can all fail a car. Readiness problems caused about 53 percent of failures on newer cars in 2025.

What does a modified software result mean?

It means the engine software has been changed in a way that is not approved. Since July 19, 2021, that fails the Smog Check. Restore factory software or use a version with a CARB Executive Order.

Can I pass smog with a catalytic converter that is going bad?

No. A failing or wrong converter will show up as a fault or fail the inspection. Repair it first. If cost is a problem, check the Consumer Assistance Program and the repair cost waiver.

Do aftermarket parts like a cold air intake, headers or a cat back pass smog?

Only if the parts are legal in California. The Smog Check confirms aftermarket parts meet California requirements. Check with CARB's aftermarket parts program before you buy.

Will a high flow catalytic converter pass smog?

Only if it is the correct, California legal converter for your car. Wrong or aftermarket converters are a known cause of failures. Some models, such as the 2000 to 2007 Honda Accord SULEV, need the original equipment converter.

Do I need to retest at the same station?

No. You can retest at any licensed station. The exception is when your renewal notice says STAR, in which case the certifying retest must be at a STAR station.

How many times can I fail a smog check?

BAR's guidance describes repairing the car and retesting without naming a retest limit. If you spend at least $650 on emissions repairs and still fail, you may qualify for a repair cost waiver from the Referee.

What is an emissions warranty and can it cover my repair?

California certified cars must have a smog failure fixed free in the first 3 years or 50,000 miles. High priced parts get 7 years or 70,000 miles. Federal coverage runs 2 years or 24,000 miles, and 8 years or 80,000 miles for the catalytic converter and engine computer.

Does an oil change help me pass smog?

It can help a little. The Referee program says there is no guaranteed method, but regular maintenance such as oil changes helps your car run smoothly and improves your chances.

Can a loose gas cap fail a smog check?

On 1976 to 1995 cars, the test checks the fuel cap and the fuel vapor system, so a bad cap can fail. On newer cars, vapor system faults often set the check engine light, which fails.

What can I do if I cannot afford the repairs?

You have four options. CAP repair aid pays up to $1,450 on 1996 and newer cars if you qualify by income. CAP retirement pays $1,350 to $2,000 for the car. A repair cost waiver is possible after $650 in repairs, and the Referee can help with disputes.

What is the smog repair cost waiver?

It postpones your smog requirement for up to two years if you spend at least $650 on emissions repairs and diagnosis and the car still fails. You get one waiver per vehicle per owner. The Referee issues it.

Do I need to pass emissions to register my car?

If your DMV renewal notice says smog certification is required, yes. The passing certificate goes to DMV electronically. You can test up to 90 days before it is due.

How do I know if my car will pass smog?

Make sure the check engine light is off, the battery has not been disconnected for at least a week or two, and the software is stock. A pretest at a station can flag problems before the official inspection. The station must give you an estimate first.

I want my car to fail smog so I can retire it. How does that work?

You do not need to fail on purpose. The Vehicle Retirement Program pays $1,350 if your car failed its most recent check, with no income test. It pays $1,500 if you qualify by income and the car had any smog test within 180 days.

Why won't my car pass emissions?

Read the vehicle inspection report, which lists the exact reasons. The usual causes are a check engine light, monitors not ready, modified software or worn parts. Ask the station to explain the report.

Does a failed smog check show up in my record?

Yes. BAR keeps inspection history that anyone can look up by plate or VIN at bar.ca.gov/inspection. Results show from midnight the day after the test.

Smog Certificates and Inspection History

How long is a smog check good for in California?

A passing smog certificate is valid for 90 days. The station sends it to DMV electronically. After 90 days you would need a new one.

How long is a smog certificate good for when selling a car?

For a private sale it must be within the last 90 days. If a dealer sells the car, the dealer's certificate is valid for two years or until the car is sold and registered, whichever comes first.

How do I check if DMV received my smog certificate?

The station sends it to DMV electronically, so you do not mail anything. You can look up your car's inspection history at bar.ca.gov/inspection. Results show from midnight the day after the test.

How can I check my car's smog history for free?

Go to BAR's inspection history page at bar.ca.gov/inspection and search by license plate or VIN. It is free. It is also useful when you buy a used car.

How can I check my car's emissions status?

Your DMV registration renewal notice says if a smog certification is due. For past results, search the car's history at bar.ca.gov/inspection. A new passing result shows by midnight of the next day.

What does a smog certificate look like?

The certificate is electronic and goes straight to DMV. What you hold is the vehicle inspection report. It shows pass or fail, the reasons and any open safety recalls. Keep a copy.

How do I read a smog check vehicle inspection report?

The report states the inspection results and whether the car passed or failed. It also lists any open safety recalls for the vehicle. If you have questions, ask the station to walk you through it.

Do I need a paper smog certificate?

No. The certificate goes to DMV electronically, so you do not carry one to the counter. Keep your vehicle inspection report for your records. Give the buyer a copy if you are selling.

Can one smog check cover both a sale and my renewal?

Often yes. A car that got a certificate at a change of ownership or initial registration in the past six months does not need the biennial check. The certificate itself is valid for 90 days.

What if my smog check expires before I can use it?

You will need a new inspection. A certificate is good for 90 days only. Plan the test so you finish your DMV or sale paperwork inside that time.

Diesel Smog Checks and Clean Truck Check

Zero emission, emergency, military tactical and historical vehicles are not covered. Out of state motorhomes and very low NOx new engines through 2027 are also left out. California registered motorhomes are covered.

How often does Clean Truck Check testing happen?

Testing is twice a year, tied to your DMV registration month and six months later. Starting in October 2027, vehicles with on board diagnostics test four times a year. Motorhomes and farm vehicles stay on an annual schedule.

How much is the Clean Truck Check fee?

The annual compliance fee is $32.13 for 2026 and $33.12 for 2027. It was $31.18 in 2025. CARB adjusts it each year for California inflation.

Roadside emissions monitoring began in January 2023. Testing requirements took effect October 1, 2024. Every deadline on or after January 1, 2025 needs a passing test.

What does a Clean Truck Check test involve?

Newer diesels from 2013 and alternative fuel engines from 2018 get an on board diagnostics scan. Diesels from 2012 and older get a smoke opacity test plus a visual check. Older alternative fuel engines get a visual check only.

Who can do a Clean Truck Check test?

Only a CARB credentialed tester. Testers take CARB's free online course, score at least 80 percent, and renew every two years.

How do I become a Clean Truck Check tester?

Take CARB's free online course and pass the exam with 80 percent or better. You renew the credential every two years. CARB runs a hotline at (866) 634-3735.

What happens if I miss a Clean Truck Check deadline?

You can face a DMV registration hold. A flagged truck gets a Notice to Submit to Testing and has 30 days to pass. You can submit a passing test up to 90 days before the deadline.

Do out of state trucks need Clean Truck Check?

Yes. The program covers heavy duty diesel and alternative fuel vehicles operating on California roads, including those from other states. Out of state motorhomes are the exception.
